@sir I guess because people nowadays are monstly not capable of using a computer. So irc as a protocol became too "hard" to use. Then companies came and hid all this nasty technical stuff in fancy guis, emojis and stuff.
This lead to people not caring about the underlying protocol as long as they were able to post funny gifs which lead to companies to implement proprietery protocols to wall the users in.
