Pinned toot

Hello, world. Some notes:
I'm not constantly online, and I use Mastodon only occasionally. I read more than I write, and I don't write much, maybe because I dont'have that much to say. Also, writing unfortunately takes a lot of effort for me.
Several of my posts are in . I am aware that the Italian language has a very limited audience on Mastodon, but I don't want to give up my mother tongue completely.

A forest is more than just a collection of individual plants. Human society is more than just a collection of individual people. The whole is cohesive, complex, and vastly more than simply the sum of its parts.

Now, perhaps more than ever, we need to remember this.

If I were American, I couldn't help being deeply ashamed of . And if I were Brazilian, I couldn't help being deeply ashamed of . Just like as an Italian I was deeply ashamed of Berlusconi.

In my opinion, the fact that such horrible people are so politically successful is strong evidence that is essentially mob rule.

Some days ago, I started reading Stendhal's classic "The Charterhouse of Parma". I find it rather flat and bland, and a bit longwinded; on the whole, quite boring. I am tempted to give up.

In late March I had an appointment with my dentist. They postponed it to late April. Now they have postponed for two more weeks. Covid-19 has made dentistry one of the riskiest human activities.

treccani.it/enciclopedia/luigi

Thinking about astronomy lets me take a break from politics. Like what if earth had two moons and they smashed together and there was a huge shower of debris and a big chunk hit the white house.

At the window. Across the street someone is singing. A lone soprano voice, slightly quivering, up and down and up the scale. I can't see the singer, I don't understand the words, but the tone is one of trepidation and hope.

"The EU has bungled its response to coronavirus and it might never fully recover... the most severe international crisis in decades is bringing into question the very foundations of the postwar European project."

Alas, that's true.

From European "leaders", the usual show of ineptitude... It is more and more disheartening...

Confined at home, from time to time I hear ambulance sirens wailing afar in the eerie quietness, and knells from churches' bell towers.

Did I buy enough oil? rice? salt? soap? Don't touch your face. Do I wash my hand often enough? Don't sneeze. Where can I buy masks? Don't cough. Is it safe to smell a flower?

The West’s Final Countdown?
by Joschka Fischer

"With the US presidential election approaching, no one can say they didn't foresee the possibility of Donald Trump winning a second term – an event that would pose an existential threat to the very idea of "the West." So why are European leaders spending their time squabbling over agriculture subsidies?"
