We're now running Mastodon 2.9.2 with supports for audio uploads.

Did you know? For more that a year, I have been testing each update on masto.angristan.xyz/ before updating mstdn.io.

Honestly, whoever has an idea for a spam detection measure for Mastodon, and by that I do mean an implementation, get in touch with me, I'll pay for it.

I've been thinking about solutions for the past few days but the more I think about them the more they appear pointless.

In other news, the migration I did a few weeks ago seems to have ended the storage issues for good. Fingers crossed.

Also I can't approve new accounts right away but mostly about a day or two after, so this will likely hurt the engagement of new accounts here. But I don't have a choice.

When I suspend the accounts I also manually ban their IP address but this isn't super useful (and takes even more time)

I successfully blocked some referrers but that isn't enough.
They also use verified gmail and outlook addresses.

In the end, they are impossible to detect until they toot some shitty backlink.

I don't know why this instance if targeted with spam but we're really in a shitty spot. The worst is that I can't automatically detect spammers: they are real humans beings (legit user agent, captchas would be useless) and while they mostly are from India, they come from many different AS.

Note that this isn't a perfect solution since it sill takes a lot of time to approve the accounts, and most of the accounts don't properly fill the registration form (e.g. "Why do you want to register here?") so I have no idea if they are legit or not.

Since there is way too much spam going on (I banned dozens of accounts in the last few days), the registrations will have to be manually approved by me.
If you want friends to come here, please use the invitation system.
