De-googlizing Android

Sorry, folks, Android can't be de-googlized. These supposedly de-googlized variants let a few hardcore nerds opt out of Google's direct spying and advertising, but they do nothing to pull developers away from the Android ecosystem, so they still benefit Google.

De-googlizing Android

If you really want to hurt Google, figure out a way for developers to make money off of apps in F-Droid, to the extent that they choose to remove their apps from the Play Store.

@freakazoid I know cryptocurrencies are controversial nowadays, but micropayments were thought to be the only hope to create an Internet ecosystem supported by something other than ads.

And Bitcoin seem to be failing at its original promise, while everyone's so busy hoarding it and speculating on it.

And yet, here I am with my regular monthly donation budget, already donated over $50 worth of BTC to various youtubers, apps from f-droid or elsewhere. It's getting easier than ever, I don't see any "failing". Spend & re-buy, that's the current best strategy for promoting bitcoin adoption.

@chebra @codewiz How are you buying it? How do you deal with the tax requirements? I'm curious because I've been loathe to buy any more with all the regulations around it; I initially just used Coinbase.

De-googlizing Android

@codewiz @chebra I think all that uncertainty and confusion is the single biggest hurdle to Bitcoin's growth. It offsets the amazing user experience of just installing a wallet and receiving and sending money without even putting in your name when you have to deal with KYC to actually buy it

Of course, the world powers are trying to make it as cumbersome as possible. I'm buying it on exchange, went through KYC a couple years ago. And I have to file my taxes anyway because of business, so I'll just add these in. Buys are exported from the exchange in csv, I'm keeping track of the sells (donations) in my own spreadsheet. That's all that's needed to calculate the capital gains tax.

@chebra @codewiz Right. Which is a substantially greater burden than using LiberaPay, Patreon, or PayPal. Which is funny since as I recall Bitcoin's advantage was supposed to be ease of sending and receiving payments.

You can hardly blame Bitcoin for this. It's the only instrument with which governments are not sure if it's a currency or asset or nothing, but they are very sure it must be taxed and regulated like hell.

De-googlizing Android

@chebra @codewiz I 100% agree. I thought I made it clear in my initial response that I didn't blame Bitcoin for the problem. Regardless, the problems' not being Bitcoin's fault still doesn't make Bitcoin a viable solution.

You know, if we always went only for the most convenient solution, we wouldn't be here on fediverse. De-googling will also always be slightly more inconvenient than staying with google. Protesting against corrupt government will always be more inconvenient than staying at home. Same with Bitcoin, FOSS, and many other things. But it's worth the trouble. It's not even that much trouble. And the benefits are huge. Viable enough for me.

De-googlizing Android

@chebra @codewiz I agree, but that has nothing to do with Bernie's or my point, which is that it's not going to get free software funded.

@freakazoid @chebra My understanding is that the guidelines for crypto released by the IRS are just what they are, guidelines.

If you can show that you bought Bitcoin from Coinbase only for making donations, and not to hold it as a form of investment, then the IRS has no ground to require it to be handled differently from using other currencies normally (like, buy some Euros for a trip to Europe).
