While visiting the Smithsonian Space Museum in DC, I spotted something I had never seen before: the console of the mythical Apollo Mission Simulator.

It's the first "multiplayer game", running on mainframes, flight computers and other ground equipment networked across multiple buildings.

Nailing a moon landing on the first attempt required months of training and rehearsals from everyone involved.

The "malfunction insertion" keypad allowed testing various scenarios which required quick reactions from the crew and the flight controllers.

@codewiz this would be an epic game to have in an arcade

@codewiz When I was at #Jaxa the other day, I asked if the designs of the chips they have companies develop for use in space are getting published.. unfortunately not.
If that was the case, they could even be used by kerbal space program for better simulation.of the reality.

@globalc The US government cannot hold copyright, therefore everything NASA designs eventually becomes public domain.

Though this principle does not apply to technology commissioned from the private sector, even when it's 100% paid with public money :-(
