anybody know if a big old air conditioner seeming to cause rather worse of a brownout when the compressor kicks on is related to e.g. a capacitor that needs replacement or something like that??

the AC unit in my part of the house causes a serious flicker on lights & outlets in half the house when it starts up, and trips my UPS for a second every time as well.

@deutrino it's possibly the starter cap, sure, but it could drawing those extra amps for other reasons, too. Motor bearing failure, loss of grease, brainbox breakdown, even an entire failed coil. If you can get at the motor, though, they're all diagnosable and most are fixable for not too much.
