let’s befriend all the maintenance people who seem capable of singlehandedly taking down giant banks by kicking a power strip out of a wall or burning a piece of toast

bay area tech leftism is: posting about the revolution while being socially anxious and ignoring the person restocking snacks or fixing the elevator so i am 0% surprised we don’t have solidarity and aren’t getting big things done

"Designing for the web ought to mean making HTML and CSS" by DHH m.signalvnoise.com/designing-f

"[T]he industry is making it too hard to work directly with the web. The towering demands inherent in certain ways of working with JavaScript are rightfully scaring some designers off from implementing their ideas at all. That’s a travesty."

@tom79 I don't understand how the Tags feature works, in post edit mode... shouldn't the little "save" icon put the tag into the current post, rather than asking to save it again..?

tfw you try to add a definition for to Urban Dictionary and after doing all the work to type it in the site wants you to log in and only provides you the option of using your google id or your facebook id

@jsalvador @falgn0n @fatboy No, indeed, it is not that much fun that Signal uses Amazon servers, but the alternatives are either not good enough or too difficult to use (Ricochet, Jami, Tox, Briar) or not enough friends, family, co-workers are using it (XMPP). The people that I communicate with, shows a growing amount of Signal users.

@fatboy

re: Whatsapp

I've tried #XMPP. fail. (nobody else in my circle wanted to use it)

I tried #Matrix. fail. (nodbody else in my circle wanted to use it)

I tried #Jami (#Ring). fail. (choose between battery killer and not actually receiving any messages)

I tried #Signal. fail. (won't work without google services)

I tried #Tox. fail. (half the time messages just don't get delivered)

😕

Not sure where to next, but if you find something, let me know ;)

To #Fdroid users. I am sorry, but 1.72.0 was not intended to be published.

*It's a beta release*

You should downgrade the app for more stability.

Also, you noticed that the name was changed into #Fedilab

i wrote a blog post about activitypub! i promise it's different from everyone else's blog posts about activitypub, probably!

https://ktn.fyi/blog/posts/20190208-mastodon-is-not-just-a-server
many thanks to @cwebber for inspiring me to write this

@kaniini A really useful article on the Pleroma wiki is now refusing to load: "Hacking Pleroma: Elixir, Phoenix, and a bit of ActivityPub" now pops up a spurious "this project has no wiki pages" page.

Props to instances like dev.glitch.social and cybre.space that maintain interesting Mastodon forks. I learn a lot from looking at their codebases.

@dansup I've mostly used acme-tiny and had no problems at all. Maybe 20-30 minutes overall time spent when doing it the first time. I like that it doesn't try to do any magic like certbot, so you just point your web server to the relevant cert file yourself.

@dansup certbot is honestly not that great of a ACME client IMO, last weekend I replaced my remaining certbot using servers with acme.sh
