@fitheach Exactly; I figured I needed a cheap tele to get started, see how much I use it. And I must say, this was the first trip where I really made good use of it. Here in Europe I've only ever used the fixed wide angle lens.
Long lenses are essential for wildlife, particularly small birds. Ideally they also need to be fast, as great distances mean any hand wobbles are exaggerated greatly. Sadly, fast, long lenses are big, heavy and exceedingly expensive.
