One wonders, "what will this new Social Media Identity end up expressing or standing for?" Naturally one gets shaped by those one interacts with.

In the case of [email protected], my first little project of identity-manifestation may be pivoting around cosmic.voyage/ - I love the notion and want to see what people come up with.

Expect some commentary! No followers here yet means I have no worries about spamming people with toots that bore them. 😜

An initial on Mastodon:

I don't yet know what I'll share where and how. 2018 was a year of self-discovery and re-invention, I'm in the process of finding my new writer's-voice.

I'm interested in and , deep interest in human spiritual traditions, integrating their meaning from a scientific worldview. (So call me post-atheistic if you like, it's a linguistic matter?)

Further interests include armchair-theorising about and And more, l8r.

The feed on my "low-volume" list only goes back 5 days. So Lists aren't a good enough way to not miss things if I'm not on the site at least twice a week. 😕

"What, like magic?"
"Sort of. Come the need, you will be able to combine, to form a hugely powerful body."
"Cool! How does it work?"

On benefit of the doubt...

A "Poly.Land" post from last month has been on my mind, having raised awareness on some dynamics of trust:
poly.land/2019/03/01/i-feel-th

Last year this really got driven home for me when I made a mistake while acting with the best of intentions. No opportunity to explain what happened, no conversation since: a total breakdown in communications. Betrayal of trust felt on both sides.

One builds trust and mutual understanding in order to avoid such things happening.

One can find dualisms in so many places, in so many ways of relating to life and existence. Consequently the notion of non-dualism is also very broad, encompassing so many things and so many concepts that "defining non-dualism" is rather hard.

In fact, "defining non-dualism" can even feel a bit like an oxymoron to me, given how the act of defining feels like a manifestation of dualism: a definition often seeks to delineate what is, and what is not, a particular concept.

"In your own words, what would make you a good choice for the first Mars colony?"
"I am near immortal, and superhumanly strong."
"I see. And why do you want to go?"
"The moons of Mars are probably too small to make me turn when they are full."
"Probably?"
"I have no other hope."

Probably if I had a real community of flesh-and-blood humans that I could commiserate with and swap stories with, I'd feel a lot more enthusiastic about my side projects. But as is, I can see my interest starting to slack. There's no substitute for real human connection.

So that's my pitch for why we need a decent tech meetup in Seattle. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. *drops slides on the floor, awkwardly picks them back up*

Does some corner of the Fediverse have the option to rank posts yet? (As opposed to sort-by-most-recent.)

By-recency sort order makes me feel more need to read exhaustively, which is too much / discourages following people that post "too regularly". (Whereas rank's downside is me being influenced by algorithms' decisions, of course.)

Mostly I don't want the irregularly-posting-friends' toots to get lost among the volume of others. ("Prioritise selected friends" could help.)

Cosmic Voyage: Hello Voortrekker!

Oh yes! I finally got started with Voortrekker, and just couldn't help myself: with sweet, sweet twists in the tale in the first update, I had to jump ahead and immediately read the second/third[1] update too. 😄

Next time I read (tomorrow I expect) I'll get back to reading the two entries I skipped: which means I'll also get started with Hoffnung.

([1] The "second" update is a one-liner quoting the original "email" in base64 encoding.)

[Completionist thread toot links, ignore this toot]

A touch of OCB (behaviour, not disorder 😜), I'm now keeping my Cosmic Voyage toots in a thread. My first two toots on the topic aren't connected though, so I'm linking back to them:

Starting out - "toot 0":

Cosmic Voyage: why do people write?

In , I not only like the co-creative interaction of stories, I love the participation of "less serious writers". Creative endeavours are worthwhile even when not in the running to win a Hugo.

We loose our humanity, our soul, our whole sense of *meaning*, when we allow our "competitive" mindset to continue to dictate our valuation of things. It's permeated our ways of relating to the world to the point where we don't even realise it's there.

Cosmic Voyage

Read four to get to the third Melchizedek update. Still the richest story. Tomorrow I get to start with Voortrekker! :)

I'm curious about the authors. Maybe I should visit the IRC channel. 😊 (And what's the best hashtag?)

Most of the folks speaking of rationalism tend to self-demonstrate that humans are rarely rational creatures. At this point it's an effective keyword for flagging emotionally crippled "bros."

Meaning can be seen as a riddle. "I am the inescapable reason for all things to exist. What am I?" The scientific process doesn't provide an effective strategy for solving riddles, though.

I don't really believe in objective reality. Due to its nature, I don't need to.

Mastodon RSS/Atom feeds: describing features and usability niggles

It seems Mastodon provides both an RSS feed and an Atom feed for profiles.

For toots with "CW", the RSS feed contains only the CW and original toots, whereas the Atom feed contains both "summary" and "content", and both original toots and replies.

Distinguishing the two is hard though. Unless you're pasting the actual rss or atom URL, Feedly (for example) makes it hard to know which you're about to look at and what they contain.

Cosmic Voyage: reality-drive and world building

I read three stories this morning - I wanted to get to the second Melchizedek update.

The "reality-drive" monstrosity caught my eye: Melchizedek updates laying out some narrative foundations for diversity of stories cohabiting the same universe.

Dialogue with Starbloom: I like the co-creation, the "yes, and", the fact that this can be a dialogue instead of the monologue of more classical story writing. 🙂 Inspiring!

🤔 In some fantasy of becoming a hard-sci-fi writer, how hardcore might I get with my calculations, my modelling of a fictitious propulsion mode? How significant is 0.002° drift for interstellar travel, how does one even measure or express this at Relativistic Speeds, where distances get squashed?

e.g. scratch your head about en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Length_c

Limiting myself to one story per day for now. How many toots per story though? We'll see :)

Ooh, this "CW" functionality is cool! :-)

Nothing particularly interesting about my first use of it though: I'm still experimenting with Mastodon, haven't even uploaded a profile pic yet! How recognisable should it be? 🤔

So here we go: I now have a Mastodon account, consequence of the death of G+.

Old identity: plus.google.com/+HugovanderMer
Another old identity that still continues to exist: twitter.com/hugovdm

Diaspora identity: [email protected]

I don't yet know where I'll end up settling down. Until then, I suspect I'll have a plethora of online identities, which can at least eventually be used to point people at my most stable social media presence.
