@sjb I wonder how they did it - is there a data link down the umbillical? Or an RF link, so that the jet pack can send a few more pictures as it departs?

@jhol NASA says the camera was on the descent stage, but you can see it's still connected via cables to the rover at that point in time too. RF links got unreliable at certain points in the landing, I would guess the transmitter is on the lander and they used cables but I could be wrong.


@sjb I suppose the cameras were used by the jet pack for navigation, and were logging snapshots all the way down, even before the cables were extended.

Designing a lengthy, reliable, lightweight, high-bandwidth link for this short-lived purpose sounds like an intimating task.
