I didn't know you could write PAM module using Python (pam_python.so), this is actually quite cool :-)

Some things never change.

Anyone thinking Linux kernel and GCC take a long time to compile today should try it on hardware from 1996. Kernel still took like 30min compiling on Cyrix PR-150+.

Fast-forward to 1999 and try compiling GCC on an HP K-class of the time. We're measuring each task in hours here. It had to bootstrap stage 1 from the skeleton compiler, then make stage 2, and stage 3 (and this was JUST GCC)

Friendly reminder. Full disk encryption on a server you have no physical access to grants you no security, same for your laptop if you carry it around in sleep mode. FDE protects your data at rest as from a cold boot you need to provide the passphrase. If your box is running the secret is present in memory and can be grabbed by a dedicated attacker.

For the same reason, when approaching border control, TURN OFF your phone, just locking the screen is often not enough.

Rant about browsers

For an organization like Mozilla, building your own engine is an important choice. It's expensive, but it gives them a bigger seat at the standards table and allows them to fight for things that you just can't fight for if you're merely downstream from the browser implementer.

I've sat in standards meetings at the W3C where the Mozilla rep was the one constantly asking "What are the privacy implications of this API?" and "How could this be abused to leak user data?"

I wonder if this is even going to be accepted to the mailing list, even then I don't really expect any useful answers, if any.
