A reminder that Mastodon and the Fediverse do NOT use cryptocurrency, blockchains, NFTs, tokens, coins, mining, web3 or anything like that.

Masto and the Fedi run on traditional servers and use a sustainable network federation model somewhat similar to e-mail (that's why Fediverse addresses look similar to e-mail addresses).

Also a reminder there are no venture capital firms or other investors either. No one owns the network, each server is independent. Masto and Fedi server running costs are paid by their owners, sometimes with donations from users.

No one is getting rich from the Fediverse, it is all volunteers with some getting donations and a few getting modest grants from foundations. Please remember this when you interact with admins or developers.

(There might be some individual users who post about cryptocurrency/blockchain, but the infrastructure this place runs on doesn't use it at all.)

Tl:dr - Decentralisation does NOT mean cryptocurrency/blockchain

Oh Odysee, I swear it goes down daily.

Almost always when I'm trying to upload videos. :blobdisgruntled:

Question about boosts:
Suppose user A blocks user B. User C boosts user A, and user B is subscribed to user C.
1. Can user B see user C's boost?
2. Can user B respond to user C's boost?
3. For both these questions, can one find source code/documentation to confirm the answer?

I won't go on at length about this too much, I typically just boost a post about it every so often when it comes up on my timeline.

but people just joining should know there's a complex history here, as with any social network - especially a grassroots one - that's been around for a decade already

it's now time for any noobs following me to learn that

* it's the Fediverse, not The Mastodon Network

* there's actually a 10-year history here and Mastodon wasn't even remotely the first platform

* the creator of Mastodon hasn't actually been a very good steward of his particular sub-platform within the Fediverse

I should get to work. I've been putting off stuff all day.

So using my own server does make discovering others with similar interests a bit of a challenge, unless I’m missing something here

@jalefkowit I'm in a small town that's actually relatively well off in this respect. While my parents (whom I have been staying with since the pandemic) currently get overpriced broadband from Spectrum, after all these years, larger and larger parts of the town are finally getting access to fiber.

@jalefkowit To call that article stupid is an understatement. It's offensively out of touch.
There are huge areas of Upstate New York that don't have access to internet faster than DSL, and the Times writes instead about real estate being too expensive near Long Island.

@jalefkowit For a second I thought this was about internet availability in rural areas.

Then I reread the headline.

@robin I use browser apps on desktop and use for mobile, which I get using .

@NothingAndTrash Sounds like I was right to warn my mother away from there.
According to some old chats I found, when defederated they told some egregious lies about the Fediverse and the AGPL to their members.

@NothingAndTrash For the record, I got that nonsense crypto take from an article by a certain "Dave Troy" my mother got from Twitter and sent to me after finding it "fascinating". I then (successfully!) explained to her exactly what was wrong with the article.

@NothingAndTrash Oh my. I recall him blocking IP addresses from 6 countries, but the unilateral control by one person and the audience of unhinged people is concerning.
How unhinged are we talking about? Is it "cryptocurrency isn't just a scam, but a fascist plot involving Nina Turner and AOC" levels of unhinged, or something even dumber/stranger/otherwise worse?

@NothingAndTrash My mother thought of joining . I was able to get her to pause that based on just the few things I heard from when CS defederated.
What is the governance and ownership structure at CS actually?
