me: what are beans anyway. what makes a bean a bean

web: beans are seeds that aren't nuts and aren't peas and aren't anything else that isn't a bean, which are like the eggs of plants, such as the egg plant, which has seeds that aren't beans or nuts. peas are beans that aren't beans. if plants laid eggs we'd probably call them beans or nuts or seeds or something else. the peanut isn't a pea but it is a nut. there's actually several types of beans. nuts aren't a type of bean however beans are

I went camping yesterday and, out in the sticks, there were a lot of "Trump 2020" signs (and a few Biden signs). But my favorite sign said "Giant Meteor 2020"

Do NOT talk to cops. The only things you say to a cop are:

1. Am I free to go? (Leave if yes)
2. I am exercising my right to silence and to speak to a lawyer.

Then you shut the fuck up.

Somebody actually did this and managed to make a few surveillance cameras crash thanks to the antivirus tripping: revk.uk/2020/01/eicar-test-qr.

I shared this last semester too, but I will never stop feeling joy each time I use Whitney to introduce while loops to CS 1 students.

And to be even clearer on another point: I do not think the Democrats are "the best thing since sliced bread". And in a better time I would be the first to point out plenty of their faults.

But this is no better time. This is the choice between literal fascists, and an admittedly-not-progressive-enough party.

We can (and should) have that much-needed conversation about their many faults come January. Until then, it's all about getting the fascists out.

Incidentally, on the topic of the Russian troll farms, I still think it is an interesting and weird story, this was the most entertaining version I saw: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/07/magazine/the-agency.html?_r=1

Unsurprisingly, their stuff usually falls flat (try the reverse: post something in Russian on VK and see whether you win any hearts and minds), and for all the Russkie posts on Twitter and Facebook, the overwhelming majority of Trump voters reported that they didn't get their news from the internet, and more than half of them had no Facebook *or* Twitter account, so even if it was masterfully crafted, most people wouldn't even have seen it.

On the other hand, if you were Russia and you could toss a few kopeks at something that might or might not land, why wouldn't you? What would be stopping you? That's the core of it: it's cheap to do if you are a nation-state and there's no reason not to.

And it's the same thing with 50-Cent Army posters from the PRC. (YCL posters are different, they're not being paid: that's people copypasting Xinhua agitprop voluntarily, the same reason our local yoofs post agitprop.) None of it really lands, they're persistent, it's just something that countries like this do. Here's another interesting story, :glowing::fluoride::cia: is the reason anyone's ever heard of Jackson Polluck: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/modern-art-was-cia-weapon-1578808.html . Even Palestine does this, they're not even officially a nation-state: BDS is funded and organized by Hamas. Hell, businesses have been doing this since forever.

Politics is dirty and there are people you've never heard of doing things you don't understand to manipulate events you experienced without noticing. That's just life on earth, so it strains credibility to say Russia wouldn't do this, but there's also no reason to freak out about it because it has been going on since before any of us was born. People freak out about that but no one even remembers the PRC cracking the OPM wide open and getting kompromat on every government employee that had any. That's more "dangerous to democracy" than Russia buying some Facebook ads or paying some shitposters.
