I'm really surprised that there apparently isn't a "not made with prison labor" symbol for products, verified by a third-party group similar to the Non-GMO Project or the Vegan Society

When Americans buy products that say "Made in the USA" they expect the money to go into supporting local, well-paying jobs, not fueling private prisons who utilize slave labor. This is the desire regardless of political alignment. People need the ability to make an informed decision

BBC consultation on TV licences, Call to Action for UK peeps

The Tories are trying to force the #BBC into paying for free TV licences for the over 75s. This would cost the service £745m per year and effectively results in a 20% budget cut.

If you would like to have a public service broadcaster which doesn't axe the majority of its services, you can respond to this consultation that the BBC are running until February 12th: bbc.com/yoursay

Unix curmudgeon / kids these days

I am eternally amazed that so many linux users — not novices, people paid for it — do not know what tilde means to the shell. Like, “edit ~/.profile” resulting in blank stares like I’m the crazy one.

Tech grumbles

@bgcarlisle send.firefox.com has solved this issue, for me at least.

Brain: "This coffee brick. It is made of coffee."
Brain: "Before, it was liquid and nice."
Brain: "The pot is steel, do not microwave."
Brain: "Induction burner on low."

90 seconds later: *SPOOT*

Turns out if you've frozen your coffee in a steel stock pot in a sub-zero(F) kitchen, a seal is formed. Application of heat creates a coffee canon, lobbing an eight pound shot of frozen coffee about a foot in the air.

Brain: "Enemy on left!"

And this is why I punched the coffee. Because that helps.
