Happy Free Software Day!

I'm accidentally celebrating by just learning about all the cool organizations and people working on free software in India. As in, I learned about FSFI first, and then I pulled on further threads from there and found more orgs, and then I discovered on their news pages that today is FSD. 😀

FSF India fsf.org.in/ @fsfi

Swathanthra Malayalam Computing smc.org.in/ @smc

Software Freedom Law Center, India sflc.in/ @sflcin

Free Software Community of India fsci.org.in/

The FSCI don't seem to have an official account on Fedi or Diaspora, but I'm now following some individuals mentioned on their website, by just searching for their usernames on Fedi and Diaspora.

Fediverse app and blocking bad domains

Whenever someone mentions @fedilab or similar apps which chose not to implement a domain block of gab etc., people demean it and call the app "fascist". I stand by this statement:

My personal take, implementing a block list is a full time job. Look at how adblock addons rely on a number of community maintained lists of advertising and tracking domains.

Never thought that I will come across a Statute, the name of which exceeds @[email protected]'s 280 characters limit. Here is a screenshot of the name. Is this the longest worded Statute in India ? @[email protected]

Tech corporations demand "freedom" to exploit the software commons without contributing to it. To use open source communities and their volunteers as unpaid interns, while keeping the platforms they build on top of their work proprietary, and patent-encumbered. To ensure their ability to keep doing this, they run a constant PR offensive against copyleft licenses that oblige reciprocity, framing them as a denial of developer freedom (to prevent users and other developers using their freedoms).

Qualified appreciation of ProtonMail for finally making their stuff open source

However, I still strongly recommend against them, because basic access to open/standard protocols like IMAP and SMTP should never be locked down as a paid "extra"
