Writing documentation is enjoyable, more people should do it

Every time people get freaked out over the newest Boston Dynamics robot video and think that this is surely the end of humanity, I feel like they forget that we already have *robots that fly* and they're *completely available to anyone for very cheap*.

There seems to be some unknown entity inviting students to parties here in Finland, and recently this resulted in 150 new cases of covid spreading. Now, setting aside the fact that you obviously shouldn't go to a party now even if you're invited, it's a complete mystery who actually invited people and "organized" these parties. There were no organizers to be seen at the place itself, for example, and online the inviter is just some ominous facebook page called "international student party". 🤔

When you hear the phrase "free market," you probably think of "a market that is free from regulation" but that's the opposite of the phrase's original meaning!

Adam Smith used the term to describe a market that was free from "economic rents" - money earned by owning things, rather than doing things. Smith recognized that markets attract parasites - "rentiers" - who seek to drain wealth by "investing" rather than building and doing.

Update: we just got a call from a Google VP who explained the suspension was triggered by a report of extremely abusive content accessible on the matrix.org server. Our trust & safety team had already acted on it, and the app should be reinstated shortly.

Hungary's government orders disclaimers on books with gay content
reuters.com/article/us-hungary
'Hungary’s government, which has made hostility to LGBT people a central part of its right-wing agenda, ordered a publisher on Tuesday to print disclaimers identifying books containing “behaviour inconsistent with traditional gender roles”.

The government said the action was needed to protect consumers from being misled, after Labrisz, a Lesbian group, published a fairytale anthology, “Wonderland Is For Everyone”, which included some stories with gay themes [....]

Other stories depict minorities in a positive light, including Roma and disabled people. The character Snow White, renamed Leaf Brown, has dark skin.

[....] Last year Hungary banned recognising transgender identities in official documents, and amended the constitution to declare that in a family “the father is a man and the mother is a woman”.

:blobthinking: believing that people have True Names - hokey but understandable

:blob_gnikniht: believing that each person has a single True Name - unduly limiting but not impossible

:hot_shit: :oh_no: believing that a person's One True Name is whatever a government registry has on their records - the perfect blend of authoritarian and bureaucratic

random fun fact: the Germanic name Harald/Harold stems from some proto-Germanic name "harja-walda". By some weird sequence of events, there is a place in Finland today called "Harjavalta", which also gets its name nearly entirely unchanged from that old proto-Germanic name.

oh man, they managed to take the vaccine development speedrun time from the previous WR of 4 years (Merck, mumps vaccine, 1967) to sub-1 year
