Is there a good argument for having a self-hosted backend in 2018 when cloud infrastructures like Amazon AWS and Google Firebase exist? I might end up leading a new project soon and while I personally prefer writing my own backend, does it actually make sense in terms of time and money?

@thor Depends. There are some obvious reasons, such as keeping your data under your control - which however requires more than just writing your own back end (hosting storage and servers to begin with). Maybe a good starting point would be lookinyat some back end approach that works with AWS or Google same as with custom infrastructure if needed. Things such as or come to mind.
