Years ago, I read a letter to a newspaper by a woman who had recently moved from the US to Europe. She said that in the US she felt overwhelmed and oppressed by the ubiquitous displays of patriotism, and when she moved to Europe, where such displays are usually much more restrained, she felt relieved. That seem to be a real difference between Americans and Europeans. And, yes, I prefer the European version.

@angristan There are other places with polite patriotism like that. In Canada, we are fiercely proud of our health care, our nature, our hockey team, and not being American.

@angristan So, Iโm german too โ but that is wishful thinking! We have a growing toxic political environment like almost every other country in recent years.
