Last night's #FridayFilm was:
It Happened Tomorrow (1944)
A romantic comedy & fantasy film, mostly set in the late 19th century. A city newspaper reporter's wish to get tomorrow's headlines today comes true. However, things don't quite work out the way he plans.
Dick Powell & Linda Darnell are both excellent in the lead parts as the reporter and mystic, respectively.
A simple premise, delivered really well & at a frantic pace.
This film came at an interesting point in Dick Powell's career. He wanted to move into more dramatic roles, rather than the lightweight comedy & musicals he had done previously. He wanted the lead in Double Indemnity (1944), but lost out to Fred MacMurray. However, he was successful in getting the part of Philip Marlowe in Farewell, My Lovely (1944) .
He was the first actor to portray Marlowe for film, and it transformed his career.
The film was known as Murder, My Sweet in N. America.
