We published a statement on our stance on neutrality of free software (and why we won't stay neutral in this case): f-droid.org/en/2019/07/16/stat

"We believe platforms like F-Droid’s repository or fediverse instances must be moderated in order to prevent oppression and harassment to flourish." - this is wrong headed in the extreme.

It's not your business to dictate what people can and can't say online.

Your job is to be a neutral platform. If it's criminal, take it down. If not, you have no right - even if you don't like it.

@jhol Of course they have a right to do so. F-Droid is a private service provider and has as much right to filter the software it ships as Gab has the right to abuse free speech.

@fdroidorg

@phoe
Oh its a private platform they can do what they wish and its not true.
@fdroidorg @jhol
@phoe
Like fdroid is a public one because I can go publicly download these apps and as the fedi its public too.
@fdroidorg @jhol

@phoe @ice

Come on, you can understand that: just because it's legal to do something it doesn't mean users of a "private" service can't be disappointed

@alexl
Most of us are kinda are disappointed like what they are saying like oh only people. we ideas agree with can use apps.
@phoe

@phoe @fdroidorg

Gab is millions of individuals. I don't like some of them. They have the right to speak. I will block them if I don't want to hear them.

Gab cannot "abuse free speech". Both because it's not a monolith, and because you can't abuse free speech by definition.

@jhol
I partially agree with this: it is *very* wrong headed.

On the other hand, it is for #FDroid and nobody else to decide what their job is. And they most certainly have every right to take down whatever they don't like. It is their time and their effort.

It clearly shows inexperience and that someone is spending too much time online though.

@fdroidorg

@jhol you do know you can still use FDroid and have an app developer host its own repository meaning they won't have to comply with the FDroid repo guidelines right

@xinayder Yes I do know that. But it's important that f-droid don't allow the defaults to become captured by political partisanship

@jhol @fdroidorg

I think it is actually backwards. Moderation makes it taboo, taboo makes it "cool" and that makes it flourish, which it will find a way to do. Heavy handed tactics feed into a martyrdom complex and actually has the *opposite* of the intended effect.
