I'm still using Voip.ms for occasional texting, it's been like a week or two and the experience on Android hasn't upset me.
I still need to figure out how to stay logged in on desktop but I feel like that's got to be a solvable problem, and also I care less about it.
time to change my Signal number to match, and update my phone number with any entities I want to have the new one... I think I'm finally done with Google Voice for real & forever.
oh, also? Voip.ms allegedly supports texting (SMS) over SIP - RFC 3428. they have an API.
what's a bit weirder about this is that the spec is ancient and almost nothing supports it, but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be able to have a VOIP phone app *with texting* on my laptop as long as one of these boutique Windows apps works properly under Wine. and signs so far are good on that front!!
okay wait I was wrong, a lot of apps (including many ancient and/or abandoned ones) support text messaging via #RFC3428, it's just that most are poorly documented, out of date, require some manual setup etc.
but so far I've managed to get a couple Windows phone apps running under Wine to send some texts!
so far it's looking like MicroSIP under Wine might be the least-worst option.
SMS does appear to work with PhonerLite but the UX is terrible.
*outbound* SMS worked with Linphone but inbound didn't work out of the box.
trouble in paradise: MicroSIP-on-Wine eventually seems to have locked up without any interaction happening.
ugh, I'd rather this just work than have to figure out what is wrong with Linphone.
