What I am saying is, Farcaster has some value but it's also got frustrations. I'm not getting much traction there in part because I am critical and negative and that vibe doesn't match the builder vibe, which to be honest I consider gross toxic positivity.

@sun it's microblogging?

@deutrino yeah, that's about all it will do, it has no other primitives than note and emote and reshare.

clients extrapolate some extra functionality through embedding link content

@sun interesting, especially the bit about toxic positivity. did you give up on Nostr?

@deutrino nothing interesting is being talked about on nostr.

I've been critical about nostr's technicals but they limp along suitably. however just no interesting discussions and other than alex I don't like anything anyone is building on the platform. bitcoin is a poor platform to build on, web3 is way better

@sun yeah, I established a toehold due to its censorship-resistant properties, but it's mostly bitcoin maxis posting affirmations and talking about eating nothing but steak. I'm probably gonna keep poking around over there though.

@deutrino I'm not completely giving up on Nostr, I just have criticisms and Farcaster is definitely a better fit for me.

@sun seems like every form of decentralized social networking has certain key downsides which stem from being decentralized

@deutrino they do, I think if you've made an attempt to use them all and understand them you start appreciating that one size is not gonna fit all. Sorry Evan, ActivityPub is not the last, best thing.

@sun yeah, with literal billions of potential users, fragmentation is fine.

@deutrino even if there was a last, best thing it would NOT be activitypub in its current form

@sun I haven't been able to keep as close an eye on its development as I'd like, despite wanting to build apps on it. I seem to recall there being some glaring unsolved problems with it even apart from the problem of having to convince every implementor to support a new object type.

@deutrino so my understanding is that the reason we have activitypub in its current form is that there was a time limit to submit a draft for w3c. it already had its deadline extended once and would have gotten dropped if it weren't submitted for approval or however it works. Even now, with years of backward perspective about what worked and what didn't etc, people are still arguing over how basic parts of it should work. I think this is a sign that the spec is too complicated for humans and a failure.
@deutrino it basically works but it's already creaking with scale and has weird parts hanging off it.

@sun interesting that even with years in on this network existing, it's really not immediately obvious how to build something very much like it but cleaner.

@deutrino I have been talking to two different people that have very different visions of how it SHOULD work. the more idealistic one has fantastic ideas and conceptualizes how it should work elegantly and cleanly but it's just too much stuff.
